Chateau des Milandes

Perigord Noir

The Château des Milandes is a jewel of Renaissance architecture and one of the region’s most enchanting sites. With its elegant turrets, finely carved stonework, and magnificent gardens, the château is both a work of art in itself and a place rich with human stories—most famously that of Josephine Baker, the legendary entertainer and humanitarian.

A Renaissance Treasure

Built in 1489 by the Lords of Caumont, the Château des Milandes was designed as a comfortable residence rather than a military fortress. Its Gothic and Renaissance features—graceful windows, delicate balconies, and ornate chimneys—make it one of the most refined châteaux of the Périgord Noir. The château is surrounded by manicured French-style gardens, with neatly sculpted hedges, fountains, and flowerbeds that provide a peaceful setting against the backdrop of the Dordogne Valley.

Josephine Baker and the Château

In 1947, the château entered a new chapter when it was purchased by Josephine Baker, the world-famous American-born dancer, singer, and actress who had become a symbol of the Jazz Age in Paris. Beyond her glamorous stage career, Baker was a committed humanitarian and activist.

At the Château des Milandes, she created her vision of a “Rainbow Tribe,” adopting twelve children of different nationalities and religions to live together as a model of tolerance and unity. The château became not only her family home but also a symbol of her ideals.

During World War II, Josephine Baker also served the French Resistance, using her fame and international tours to pass coded messages and gather intelligence. Later, she would be recognized with the Croix de Guerre and the Legion of Honour for her courage.

The Gardens and Grounds

The gardens of the Château des Milandes are among the most beautiful in the region. Laid out in the traditional French style, they feature clipped boxwood parterres, roses, seasonal blooms, and shaded paths. Visitors can stroll among fountains, admire sweeping views over the Dordogne River, and enjoy the château’s harmony with the surrounding landscape.

A Living Museum

Today, the château is a museum dedicated to Josephine Baker’s extraordinary life. Exhibits showcase her dazzling costumes, photographs, and personal artifacts, offering a vivid portrait of her dual roles as an international star and a tireless advocate for justice and equality. Visitors also learn about the château’s own history and the region’s heritage.

An Unforgettable Visit

Recognized as a Monument Historique, the Château des Milandes offers much more than history—it’s an experience of art, culture, and beauty. From its graceful Renaissance architecture to its meticulously kept gardens and the inspiring story of Josephine Baker, a visit here is a journey into both French heritage and the universal values of courage, love, and tolerance.
