About Perigord Retreats

How can you successfully combine a residential painting workshop and a holiday? Is it possible to create a place that welcomes painters and their non-painting partners? We created Perigord Retreats to give our guests an opportunity to do both. We wanted to give all types of painters the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the Perigord & Quercy regions of France in a way that allows you to paint as and when you wish, in the studio or en plain air. Whether you’re a beginner, experienced or professional painter, our workshops are designed to be stimulating and enjoyable for everyone.

Whether you’re a beginner, experienced or professional painter, our workshops are designed to be stimulating and enjoyable for everyone.

For everyone:

  • Daily excursions to the most beautiful villages and landscapes in France
  • locally sourced and cooked food
  • access to 5 acres of garden on the Perigord Retreats property
  • enjoy the quiet and tranquil location, in the middle of the countryside
  • An indoor swimming pool and outdoor Jacuzzi/spa to enjoy and reflect upon the day

For painters:

  • enjoy the medieval towns and villages, panoramic landscapes and vividly coloured flowers.
  • enjoy 24/7 exclusive access to our studio, leave your work in progress and come back to it as and when you’re motivated
  • Full support for all choices of medium – watercolour, acrylic, pastels and oils

For non-painters:

  • explore the most beautiful villages and towns in France
  • visit local chateaux and taste the local Bergerac and Cahors wines
  • canoe on the river Lot & Dordogne
  • Take a bike and explore whilst enjoying the lovely fresh, clean air and weather

We’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with some American artists such as Ivy Newport, Alain Picard and Kellee Wynne Conrad. We’ve also worked with some Australian artists such as Ev Hales and Helen Beaver.

In terms of guests, we’ve welcomed everyone from Hollywood actors to creative directors of a well well known global company.

Our workshops are different because we are a close knit family – we help each other and help you too. You may arrive as strangers but you will definitely feel like part of the family when you depart. Each workshop we astonish ourselves that we can continue to make friends each trip and often our friends return for a repeat art holiday.

We are not a five star hotel full of corporate entities. What we offer is a personal touch where you get to feel comfortable in your surroundings and very at ease and relaxed with us. You can travel alone without any worries and feel safe and secure with the knowledge that we will help you on arrival. You do not have to keep packing and unpacking, once here you are settled for the foreseeable future. Your art materials can all stay in the same place in the studio which gives you more time to enjoy what you want in the art workshop.

Comments from our guests extend to feeling a sense of familiarity and belonging never before realised at a painting workshop. A stroll down to the deciduous wood in the hamlet with one of our dogs trailing behind is a very familiar sight as well as sharing food with the hens who willingly provide our daily eggs.

I had a wonderful time! Angela and Adrian and their daughter Chloe are amazing people with a beautiful home and... property. We had excellent food, wine, desserts and went on amazing outings everyday. Maria Tavares art course is fantastic. She is an experienced, accomplished artist and is extremely patient and fun. I have been to 2 of her courses and have seen legitimate improvements in my abilities. The property, the region, the culture, the art are all fantastic! It is a beautiful experience- a must do!!!read more

I can't rave about Perigord Retreats enough. The place is run by the Turner family, and each of them works to make... this place fabulous. Angela, the mom, is a force of nature, with unbounded energy dedicated to meet each individual's needs while always smiling and filled with warmth. Her cooking is extraordinary, preparing gourmet meals for the group every day, and even making accommodations for special dietary needs. She is ably assisted by Chloe. Her son Harrison and husband Adrian are usually the drivers for daily outings to the towns and sights in the area that are picture perfect and wonderful to paint. They bring humor and charm to each adventure. Perigord even has a swimming pool, a refreshing treat at the end or start of a hot, busy day. I was concerned about spending 10 days here, not knowing what I was getting into. I came away thrilled by a perfect vacation, filled with the peace of the country, the delight of great food shared on the porch where we could smell the scent of lavender and watch the rising or setting sun, and the excitement of daily trips to places of unparalleled beauty. Thank you all for an unforgettable experience!read more

You’ll never experience anything to match the care you receive from this family. They are committed to your comfort... and Angela cooks like a top chef!Father and son are knowledgeable about wonderful places for painters and provide transport after consultation with the tutor.Angela makes up a delicious picnic for the group to enjoy while out and the men set it all up in special places.A studio, custom built as part of the Retreat,is a special bonus for completing work in the evenings, for ‘crits’ after a day out and especially when rain keeps painters indoors. Our experience with them left us feeling we had been welcomed warmly into their family and made special new friends.read more

Following on from my fifth visit to Perigord Retreats and when I thought I couldn't enjoy it any more than I had on... previous visits how wrong I was. Every trip has a something 'special' to take back home. I'm taking back this time that special memory of my new Kayaking experience. My first Kayaking experience and definitely not my last. The whole experience with the Turner family was incredible from start to finish. I'm not a natural water baby(dry land sports is my safety zone) so this experience challenged my fears and doubts. For all those thinking this wouldn't be for you.....think again!!! Firstly apart from the adrenaline rush and fun factor with a capital F! It's an exhilarating ride. Beats any theme park. The Dor Dogne is amazing and the stunning scenery can only be appreciated by experiencing it first hand actually from a canoe and riding the liberal rapids whilst sun kissed beneath the French clear blue sky with it's rays bouncing off the equally clear water. En route Angela took time to demonstrate her knowledge of French invasion of times long past within the astounding Castle walls, of which there were several that grandly stood in place over the setting. On that particular day there were many of us moving with the currant , in life jackets and flexing our oaring skills. The surroundings vast in greenery, the little alcoves hidden in the rocks, the birds touching base at various locations along the way and the whole aroma of France soaked in Medieval history would surely make this an inspirational experience. This is just one small pocket of my lovely memories from my last trip with Perigord Retreats.read more
