Domme
Domme is one of those places you have to see to believe. It doesn’t matter which way you arrive from… It seems to sneak up on you out of nowhere. But once you’re there, the unique nature of the town and the panoramic views are absolutely breathtaking. I remember sitting by the entrance to the town last summer watching the swallows chasing insects high in the sky. Such a calm place to live and enjoy the world.
This village has the best views of the region. You can see across the Dordogne Valley all the way to Beynac, La Roque Gageac and Vitrac.
The Views
With plenty of space to sit around and paint plein air. Often the farmers in the valley below choose to grow large fields of sunflowers. There are also walnut groves and other crops being grown there. It really is a site to behold and makes a great painting with the river Dordogne meandering across the scene.
Domme has a lovely church and several other beautiful buildings including a hotel and the old walls of the bastide town. If you like painting different roof structures then you’ll enjoy this spot. It has some excellent local cuisine in the restaurants – this goes without saying really… all of the towns in this region have some brilliant restaurants. They french are known for their excellent cuisine after all.
Hidden in the middle of the village is a prehistoric cave system with cave paintings. Hard to believe that in a place only 400 yards across has so much packed into it, right?
Proximity
Another good thing about this spot is that it links up well with some of the other excursion locations. From the panoramic viewpoint at Domme, it is possible to see La Rogue-Gageac, Beynac and Castelnaud-la-Chapelle, with Cenac just out of sight down below. If the day is flowing well, we can easily enjoy another one or 2 of these spots before heading home to enjoy some food cooked by Angela.
